Updated: Patch 3.0 changed everything; see here - Crit Immunity Redux
What's the big deal with crit immunity?
While you may have amazing statistics and the ability to take a massive pounding, even allowing enemies a sliver of chance to critically hit you can have serious consequences when you are raiding. If nothing else, Murphy's Law states that you are going to take a big crit at exactly the wrong time if you allow the possibility to remain open - so why take the risk?
Besides your own survival, part of your job as a tank is to make things as easy as possible on your healers. Priests, and other healers, appreciate the feral Druid's ability to get crit immune. Kirk puts it nicely when discussing the benefits of a feral tank:
What this means as healer is that you are far less worried that a sudden hit (much less a crit) is going to plunge the tank’s health into (or through the bottom of) the red zone. Damage is smooth, not spiky.
Removing critical hits from the list of healer worry allows them to get a feel for the amount of damage that you are going to take, and over time they will learn when they can leave you without a heal for a few seconds in order to patch up other party members, and when they need to really focus on you. The random nature of critical hits makes this level of synergy far less possible.
Okay, so how do I get crit immune?
There are two stats that you can accumulate that reduce your chances of being critically hit: defense and resilience. The benefits of these stats (to a Druid tank) at level 70 (for PVE) are:
- 60 defense rating = -1% crit, +1% miss, +1% dodge
- 39.4 resilience rating = -1% crit, -2% crit damage
If you were to attain crit immunity using only one stat or the other, this would equate to either 156 defense rating (which translates to 415 defense on your character sheet) or 103 resilience.
Starting out
By far the easiest way for a young feral druid to get crit immunity is by stacking defense rating. Acquire the Heavy Clefthoof set (Boots, Leggings, Vest) in a hurry, either through the Auction House, or from a friendly leather worker. Socket those pieces with +defense rating gems - Enduring Talasite is an easy-to-obtain favorite. Now see how much more defense rating you need, and browse WoW Loot to flesh out your set. It is not to hard to secure immunity following this path.
Mixing and matching
Once you have obtained crit immunity you are going to quickly realize that tying up so many slots on defense rating gear hinders your progression. Now is the time to introduce resilience gear.
It is important to realize that, although 39.4 resilience provides the same reduction in crit chance as 60 defense rating, you lose 1% dodge and 1% miss in the process. To make these up you need to ensure that you add gear that grants these benefits along with the desired resilience. Agility is the stat that you will have to use to cover the difference:
- 14.7 agility = +1% dodge, +29.4 armor
It is generally accepted that +2% dodge is equivalent to +1% miss and +1% dodge, so 29.4 agility in addition to the 39.4 resilience is equivalent (in fact, superior due to the armor increase) to 60 defense rating.
How you proceed from here is up to you. It is rare that you will find a single piece of equipment that has resilience and agility in the exact ratio that is required to replace the defense on another single piece of equipment. You will have to mix and match. Perhaps the defense on your bracers can be made up with by the resilience on a new cloak, so you will have to find new bracers that compliment the cloak.
Be careful when swapping out defense rating - it is probably worth it to break out a pen and paper and do some number crunching before committing to any switches. In addition, it is recommended that you be a packrat, and save any high defense rating gear you swap out, in case you ever need to juggle while upgrading another slot.
A word of thanks
I just wanted to extend a big 'Thank you' to Wysperra of Draenor and Obara of Muradin whose emails inspired me to get off my lazy tail and write this article. Much appreciated guys!

Thanks for explaining the connections between the magical "415" defense and 103 resilience. (I have 417 defense & 0 resilience. Not bad, but the flexibility will be nice.)
Does being crit-proof mean, though, that you're also crushing-blow-proof? Is that even possible for bear tanks?
Now if only I could figure out how (or if) I should use focus...
No, being uncrittable is very different from being uncrushable.
Only mobs that are at least three levels above you can crush. When you are level 70, this means that only raid bosses can crush.
In order to push crushing blows off of the attack table, you need to increase your avoidance stats to 102.4% (well, 100% vs a level 73 mob, but your character sheet will show 102.4% at this point).
This is probably impossible for a druid, and even if it wasn't, you wouldn't want to go there. Why? Well, if your avoidance is at 102.4%, this means that the only possible things a mob could do to you would be a miss or a dodge. You don't generate rage on a miss or dodge, therefore you can't hold aggro.
For paladins and warriors, the situation is a bit different. Since they have parry and block to work with as well, they tend to stack block rating (at least initially) since it is the cheapest one to stack. Once uncrushable, their options are to miss, dodge, block, or parry. Most likely block makes up the greatest portion of their attack table, and since warriors still generate rage on block (and paladins still take damage, thus requiring heals, this getting mana back) they can still generate aggro while not getting crushed.
Finally, since druids tend to have a large amount of health and armor, crushing blows aren't as big of a deal for them as for paladins and warriors. Yes, the damage taken by a druid will be spikier in nature than for a warrior or a paladin, but their large health and armor make up for that.
Thanks, Adese!
Thanks for fielding that questions Adese..... very much appreciated!
Hmmm so i can keep the way in Agi enchants, but what about Str. Ok its a little bit out of the thread focus, but the Str is suposed to raise your damage, which means more Aggro from normal and Crit Dmg right? But now we enter in another question...Sacrifice Str to the Agi? The Crits will loss damage, but your aggro will grow up. And Str will grant to you more High Damage in fight and a higher aggro per hit. Am i right or im just being newbie (lol)? Thnx for the attention. =)
Question then is what is the value or disadvantage of having your defense higher than 415? I was always told that I needed more defense.
Stridr Azgalor
The disadvantage is that you are "wasting" part of the defense stat in excess of 415, and generally you can get better bang for your buck through equipment w/o defense.
Is the 415 defense rating with or without Survival of the Fittest? And, if it is without SotF, what would the magic defense number be to be uncritable with SotF?
I know that SotF gives a 3% chance to avoid critical blows (with 3 points in that talent) but I get confused with the math involved in calculating the uncritable state.
490 is what you'd need without the talent.
As a new druid tank, I'm workign on hitting the defense cap, but I'm confused, I have 169 rating, for 69 defense, but my character sheet is only showing 413, have I missed something here?
http://www.wowarmory.com/character-sheet.xml?r=Emerald+Dream&n=Rhap
That means that your base Defense stat (5/level) isn't capped off at 350 yet. Just keep fighting mobs and it'll go up.
I found that mine went up very quickly to 348/349, but that last point took a few weeks of tanking to show up.
Ok I have 416 defense with SotF which would make me uncrittable but also have 120 resilience which also would make me uncrittable. Correct? So is there a benefit of having both of them or should I drop defence where I can for more stamina and dodge.
The resilience is utterly wasted if you already have the 415+ defense. Stack other stats in its place.
Then can I forget defense if i hava 39.4 resilience rating?

I am in the same boat as anonymous. I have 404 defense and 41 resilience. Is that the same as having the 415 Def OR the 120 Resilience? Guess, the question is...can you combine the two mathematically with the same result of uncrittable?
Yes, you can combine the two. Both stats provide a reduction to your chance to be critically hit, which is really the key. You want 2.6% reduction to crit - the combination of defense and resilience that you use to obtain that is irrelevant.
Here's a little calculator to help:

Okay, there's something that I think needs to be pointed out here. Resilience doesn't increase your dodge or chance to be missed, yeah, but it *does* decrease the damage you take from DoTs and it *does* require less actual Resilience rating to become uncrittable. The fact that you don't need to stack as much Resilience means that you have more options when it comes to enchants, gems, and jewelry (rings, necklaces, trinkets, etc.)
@Chump:
How often do you have a dot applied to you when tanking? It's quite rare.
Sure, resilience is quicker to get uncrittable with, and so long as you make up that other dodge/miss chance with agility, more power to you.
Karthis, you get DoTs a lot more than you think. Moroes's Garrote, the Warlock's Shadowfury in the High-King fight, etc, etc. There's not that rare, unless maybe they drop off in Tier 5 and above Raids.
I have over 415 Defense and 100 Resilience, yet I am still being Crit by Prince, and other raid bosses. What is the deal?
@Anon:
Impossible. He was probably landing crushing blows, which are different and less damaging.
If not, please provide a combat log to the contrary.
I think you're misunderstanding something about Pally tanks. Getting hit, getting healed, and using up mana is not their principle means of aggro generation.
A pally wants to stack as much block rate as possible because when they block they deal holy damage, and holy damage is how they generate aggro. With holy shield active and most likely blessing of sanctuary, every block builds more aggro than consecration ever could.

@ poster above
No, you're wrong. I play tankadin, and using abils is more threat, stacking block is plain stupid.
OK, it could be that my math is completely off, or that I am just a noob, but can you please explain how I only need to decrease my chance for being crit by 2.6% -- and how a 415 defense rating would get this done. I'm missing numbers or something here, because it just isn't making sense to me. Thanks!
Well isn't it true that only players can crit you not NPC's? Can anyone confirm this? Because I always thought that mobs crushed you not crit you, and that's what all of my friends say...
Very nice post, and very good information. Thank you much for taking the time.
@anon:
Mobs can both crush & crit. Usually you won't see a crit because good tanks are uncrittable. ;) Only raid bosses crush, so you won't see those if you're not a tank.
